Elmdonbury barn

The Brief

Barn conversion to offices

Unbuilt project

The proposal obtained consent for the conversion of the redundant barn to B1 office use. It comprises a three section barn, steel framed with brick infill, corrugated sheeting and barrel form roofs. The barn is redundant, having previously been used for grain driers and stores. Two floors are incorporated, with glass balconies on the first floor under part of the canopy of the roof on the southern and eastern elevations, where the footprint of the building is reduced. These balconies afford fantastic views across the open countryside.  The design approach expressed the steel frame externally, as is currently the case, with brick infill, using Cambridge Whites. Within the brick skin are full-height windows, and vertically boarded screens, suggesting full height agricultural openings. The overall effect is a contemporary appearance, whilst reflecting the strong form and character of the existing building.
