Gold Street

The Brief

Extensions and alterations

Description

This Grade II listed property forms part of the historic street frontage of Gold Street. At the rear of the property a poor quality glazed lean-to cut off the main living spaces of the house from the garden. The brief was to reconnect the living spaces to the east facing garden by moving the kitchen into an extension on the footprint of the existing lean-to. After it was demonstrated to the conservation officer that traditional approaches to an extension were not viable due to low first floor window cills, predominantly flat roofed designs were pursued.

The new kitchen and dining area sit beneath a zinc roof. The roof sits between the existing brick wall of the neighbour and a new brick ‘bookend’ to the south. Ceiling levels internally were really tight so a large raised rooflight pushes up within the zinc roof to create additional height internally as well as allowing plenty of natural light to filter through to the existing rooms at the back of the property. The sculptural form of the roof also includes a second, smaller rooflight over the kitchen area.  The extension has been clad with larch which will weather to a silvery grey and compliment the palette of colours that have been used on the rear elevation. Sliding folding doors open up against a projecting section of brickwork and provide a generous link with the garden. The old kitchen has been divided to provide a utility room, wc and study area and the large first floor bathroom has been divided to provide a smaller family bathroom and a master bedroom ensuite.
